Using other brand light strips

It is theoretically possible and others have done it. They would need to be 5V WS2812B LEDs and you'll need to be super-careful not to overdo it on the current.

 

That said, you'd be on your own so if you aren't familiar with how digital RGB LEDs work and potentially custom wiring, I'd recommend against it.

It can be done, but as DevBiker mentioned, you need to know what you are doing. It's not really rocket science. You just have to be careful about pin outs, and current draw of course. Here are some links you may find of interest.

If you go for it, just make sure you buy 5V WS2812B LEDs, and pay attention to what pin is what. Good luck!
