Default CMSO16GX3M2A1333C9 Intermittent Issues

Howdy!

Having some issues with a 16GB RAM upgrade (2x8GB), Corsair part number CMSO16GX3M2A1333C9. On both a MBP and an HP it seems to be intermittently causing severe system issues (the MBP has run flawless for 10 months and now getting kernel panics, the HP, had a couple of add hangs during boot ... I installed it in the HP just to cross check it). The speed is correct (on the MBP it replaced an 8GB 1333MHz set of OEM RAM).

I assume since it's the only thing that's changed it's very likely the RAM (these are business/dev/production machines, and are carefully maintained).

I was going to simply submit a request for RMA through the online system, but this memory part isn't listed. The CMSO-prefix RAM part numbers I see only shows up to 8GB, and I bought these as a pair (if you select the CMSO8GB part, the RMA system only shows it as 1 Memory Module). I'd like to send them back as a pair (I haven't isolated which one might be causing the issue). I haven't pulled them back out to determine if the modules themselves have a part number that shows in the list of RAM in the RMA system.

Should I call for an RMA or is there something in the automated system I'm missing? Like maybe the part number of the SODIMMS vs. the part number from the packaging?

I just want to make sure it's clear what I'm returning.

Thanks!

DT

MBP as in Mac Book Pro? If so does not support more than 8.0 Gig of Ram unless you have one of the latest Intel 2012 Models using X79 or Z77 chipset.
And the correct part for Apple would be CMSA8GX3M2A1333C9 for 8 gig or CMSA16GX3M2A1333C9 for one of the latest Apple NB's or desktops.
I would need to know the model of your HP system to know if it supports 8 Gig modules and again it would have to be a recent model using a newer chipset to support 8.0 Gig modules. But I would try that system again but only one module at a time and go to BIOS setup and load setup defaults then test the system with www.memtest.org.

Hey RG!

I did a followup diagnostics and one module is consistently generating errors, one module does not, and using the "error free" module both machines run perfect. Tried both in different slots too, basically all combinations with some additional RAM.

So I need to determine how to RMA this RAM. Since it's a +set+ do I need to return it as a set? Again, I'm not seeing the model number of this RAM in the online RMA system (which is a bit curious?) and now that I've removed the modules, I see the Corsair part number on each module is the same as the packaged pair of modules (above).

Thanks!

Case number: 4973035

I used this t(hread) ID number (109829) as reference and went through the RAM Guy workflow. My CM series RAM didn't have quite the same ID number layout as the example, but I provided what appeared to be the serial (two sequential number) and lot number (same for both DIMMs).

Thanks!

Just wanted to follow up!

Got my RMA number a couple of weeks ago, finally got the RAM shipped back, it got processed in a few days and shipped back (I'm the east coast so about 5-6 days shipping). The system provided status and eventually a UPS tracking number.

Got the new replacement parts installed on Thursday evening and this machine has been running non-stop since :) Including multiple VMs, dozens of different apps, and an over night extensive memory test (10 iterations at about 45-50 minutes per iteration).

No errors, no failures on any test, or during normal (and pretty extensive) use!

Thanks for the assistance, good to know the return process is pretty simple and the memory has a lifetime warranty.

Generally i pay a little more buying Corsair premium memory. But' it's only ever let me down once or maybe twice out of maybe 50 kits or so. And that was only after being used 24/7 fora few years. So i really can't complain.

For the piece of mind it is totally worth it! :)
