Lady Fitzgerald
I had a request to write a quick tutorial on how to replace the archaic (polite term) USB 3.0 front panel pass through cable with a more modern USB 3.0 header connection. While one could use an adapter to connect the two Type A USB 3.0 connectors to a MOBO USB 3.0 header, this swap is more sanitary looking and doesn't have a ridiculous amount of cable length one has to hide somehow. I read in several posts on another forum that the USB 3.0 cable and header connector from a 350D front panel connector assembly could be swapped into the 650D front panel connector assembly. One can get the 350D front panel connector assembly from here. This is what it looks like: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg206/LadyFitzgerald/IMG_0004_zps362c0d2e.jpg This is what the 650D front panel connector assembly looks like before modifying it: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg206/LadyFitzgerald/IMG_0002_zpsff3394c5.jpg There is one screw in the 350D connector assembly that secures the cover over the USB 3.0 sockets. Removing the screw and cover reveals the USB 3.0 sockets. Here is the opened up connector with one USB 3.0 socket already removed: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg206/LadyFitzgerald/IMG_0007_zpsd5924486.jpg There are three screws and several clips that secure the cover of the 650D connector. This shot shows the assembly opened up and one of the original USB 3.0 sockets removed: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg206/LadyFitzgerald/IMG_0010_zps5c38f1d7.jpg Here the sockets, cable and header from the 350D are installed into the 650D connector assembly. http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg206/LadyFitzgerald/IMG_0015_zps15953ae7.jpg The 650D assembly with the cover replaced... http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg206/LadyFitzgerald/IMG_0020_zpsf9fe64a7.jpg ...and the complete modified 650D front panel connector assembly: http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg206/LadyFitzgerald/IMG_0023_zps0933f137.jpg

LangZone
Awesome guide. I loved my 650D before I switched to a 750D. Think I may do this if I ever decide to use that case again. :)

hurricane28
Very nice and helpful, i was looking into this as well since i don't like that the front USB ports are actually extensions from the back side. Unfortunately i can't find a retailer that sells these parts from where i am from and Corsair does not ship parts over to Holland.

snapper69
I could have sworn that when I RMA'd the front cover on my 750d the new one came from Holland. Or am I having one of my strange turns again.

hurricane28
I also can use my internal motherboard USB 3.0 not in the way you did it but okay lol. I did an RMA on my front i/o panel and my hot swap bay on the top of my case and after 2 weeks i finally get my parts but to my surprise i did not get 2 front i/o panels and 2 hot swap cables but instead i get 3 front i/o panels and 2 540 air front i/o panels. I tried to do the same thing as you did but the cables were way too shirt so i could not do it in the same way but i found a solution. Now i have done something else, I've swapped the front USB 2.0 for 3.0 and use the 540 air cable as an extension so i can use my 3.0 now :) so i have 4 USB 3.0 connectors in the front instead of 2. At first i was not happy with what they send me because it was utterly stupid because i did not ask for it but after all it has its purpose i guess lol

AMDbigboy
Thanks Lady Fitzgerald, this was a great tutorial!!! In my opinion, this is the "GOAT" of all cases. So having the ability to modernize it for future use is awesome! Oh yeah, if this is your future case, then I would recommend purchasing an extra one for spare parts. Corsair has now discontinued all spare parts for this AMAZING case.
Lady Fitzgerald
Thanks! When I got my case, I laid my grubby, little hands on spare parts while I could.
jammyb
Anyone done this but kept the original usb3 wiring but instead replaced the usb 2 ports so effectively giving you 4 front USB3 ports - 2 from internal header and 2 from the factory leads that trail through the case and plug into the rear pair? LangZone
Anyone done this but kept the original usb3 wiring but instead replaced the usb 2 ports so effectively giving you 4 front USB3 ports - 2 from internal header and 2 from the factory leads that trail through the case and plug into the rear pair? I did this to my old 650D before I gave it to my brother. Thanks to this nice guide actually. I just took out the USB 2.0's. You can see from the nice picture's how to do it.
