You can plug a mouse, headset, and thumb drive. It is just a pass through, you will need to plug it into a USB3.0 port on the back of the PC to get those speeds. I have my mouse plugged into mine. Think of it as something similar to a USB port or 3.5mm jacks on the front of your case. You technically don't need it though it is much easier to plug something into it, than into the back of your PC. Even more so if it is something you have to remove or insert with any frequency.
