Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted March 5, 2010 Corsair Employee Share Posted March 5, 2010 According to ATIs website the HD5870 can use up to a maximum of 188 Watts per card. With two cards this puts you at a maximum potential wattage of 376 watts, just for the graphics cards. The HX520 is rated for 520 watts and you would be left with 144 watts for the rest of your system. In real world use its possible that the HX520 would run the system, but it would not be recommended. You can use our PSU Finder to see what we would recommend for your system.
MJinZ
You'll run fine until you play a game, where you could experience some very bad situations.

I just played Alien vs Predator, no Problem for my PSU, but the saw ~480W on my ammeter. A bit high i think, ok its maybe not exact but its really much for the HX520. Should i try it or do i have to buy a better PSU? I already tried the HX750 and i was not happy because of the loud fan. Which Corsair PSU is really quiet, and i mean quiet, like the HX520?! Can you recommend a PSU of Corsair, which is very quiet and powerful enough? EDIT: OK its not enough. Just played Left 4 Dead 2 with 4xSSAA, thats was to much for the HX520 i think. trond
I got two 5870s on a HX850, and I can't hear the PSU fan with the cards at full load (the rest of my system being overall pretty quiet also). It doesn't look like the PSU fan is increasing RPM, so there's probably a few 100W to spare. Good PSUs that don't generate a lot of heat usually don't ramp up the fan RPM before getting closer to it's maximum output. That's one of many reasons why it's not beneficial to have your system constantly pushing the PSU to the max, in my honest opinion.
Tomsen
Like i said, i had a Freeze while iam playing Left 4 Dead 2 with 4x SuperSampling. Its not enough. Maybe i will buy another PSU, or give back the HD5870. Which one i have to buy?! Only Silence is interesting for me, not the price or anything else. 750 was too loud for me. Whats about the HX1000? :p:
trond
I recommend the HX850, so why not try it? If you have the stock coolers on your XFX 5870s, I can't imagine the HX850 being louder than those at load. I find it very quiet.
Tomsen
I know that the 2xHD5870 cards are louder than the PSU at load, but in idle u cant really hear the two graphic cards at stock. The problem is i had a HX750 in the past and it was too loud at idle. The Fan is much louder than the HX520. Do you recommend the TX750, or is it as loud as the HX850? EDIT: just bought a HX850W ;) http://www.abload.de/thumb/hd5870crossfirecmqe.jpg Thank you! The HX850 is very quiet, the HX750 i had was a bit louder. dimsi
@ Tomsen looking at your image you did a no-no! did you reed the manual?! DO NOT combine the fixed and modular PCIE cables in same GPU!!! Its not recommended. And a question how much it shows on your ammeter when you play Left 4 Dead 2 with all max, everything overclocked? I would really appreciate the answer! :hihi:
Tomsen
Thank you very much for that hint. I didnt read the manual, shame on me! ;) So i fixed it. :sunglasse The ammeter shows 460-510 Watt, without the Monitor. In almost every Game, 510 Watt is max. Mostly about 460. EDIT: I saw the highest number by playing Star Trek Online with 4x SuperSampling. 530 Watt The Game performs perfectly with Crossfire and SuperSampling. ;) Playing Left 4 Dead 2 at max: 1920x1200, 4x SSAA (Supersampling)!!!, 16xAF http://www.abload.de/thumb/left4dead22010-03-07109a2l.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/left4dead22010-03-0710fawh.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/left4dead22010-03-0710ubis.jpg More Pictures Battlefield: Bad Company 2 1920x1200; DX11, 8xMSAA, 16xAF, HBAO ON http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0621-fu75.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0522-sg7g.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0522-ce8o.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0620-95r1.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0621-h5xr.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0621-86ej.jpghttp://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0621-u5n9.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0715-f62s.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0715-j6g2.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0715-46fn.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0715-pub6.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0715-b5xo.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0715-k6yu.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0715-76d4.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0716-iu6d.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0716-l56k.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0716-z6nk.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0716-k57p.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/bfbc2game2010-03-0716-46vw.jpg Alien vs Predator 1920x1200; DX11, 4xAA, 16xAF Single Player http://www.abload.de/thumb/avp_dx112010-03-0710-46y2z.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/avp_dx112010-03-0710-5wbbn.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/avp_dx112010-03-0710-599p2.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/avp_dx112010-03-0710-5fakr.jpg Alien vs Predator 1920x1200; DX11, 4xAA, 16xAF Multi Player http://www.abload.de/thumb/avp_dx112010-03-0711-0hvcp.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/avp_dx112010-03-0711-0pvbi.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/avp_dx112010-03-0711-0l855.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/avp_dx112010-03-0711-0y8lc.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/avp_dx112010-03-0711-0386n.jpg http://www.abload.de/thumb/avp_dx112010-03-0711-0o7uf.jpg
