HD120 Fan RGB Lighting Zone Down

I just noticed today that one of the lighting sections on one of my HD120 fans was not changing colour. The LEDs were lit but just staying one of the 2 colours I had selected on the 'Colour Shift' setting in Corsair Link. I restarted my system and when it came back on 3 of the lights on the lower left side of the fan won't come back on now.

I have attached images showing my Link settings and the fan in question. This seemed to just happen randomly as I wasn't in the process of doing anything with my system, and this was pre-update as I tried to do the recent upload to fix it but it had no effect.

Any assistance with this issue would be much appreciated.

It's on HUB 3 on both the hardware hub and in the display in Link software. This morning the LEDs came back on but seemed to stick to the first colour they were on when first booting, as rebooting or doing a full shut down and startup yielded the same result. I changed it to a more noticeable colour for you guys here to see.

EDIT - The pink LEDs are the ones working and responding and the blue ones on the lower fan are the ones that have came back on but not responding. The fan is set to 'static' in the Link software in the attached image.

Have you tried re-arranging the fans on the hub?

I'm trying to determine if it's the fan or if it's something else. If it's the fan itself, it'll exhibit the same behavior regardless of the port and may cause fans past it to also fail.

Also ... here's a thought ... are you sure that you have the strips and fans on the correct channels? Again, setting the strips to a static color that's different from the fans will help confirm that they are correctly configured.

The lighting has been working fine for about 2 months since I installed it, so the channels must have been correct for this time?

I did some rearranging of the fans on the hub with the following results.

1. Set fan '2' to red before switching the fan hub order over to show before changes made. Image '123'.

2. Swapped fans 2 and 3 on the hub over so the new arrangement order on the hub was 1,3,2. The result was image '132'.

3. Swapped fan 3 into hub number '4'. The result was image '124'.

4. Images 'Fan4' and 'Hub' show my settings and hub during the above stage three.

5. Reconnected into it's original configuration. The result was the fan lighting worked on boot for 5 minutes (image 'Reboot Fine until 5 minutes') but then went back to the 3 LEDs staying lit but not responding to changes as before.

Strange results, not sure where to go from here.

First, you can't "skip" a fan port. They have to be connected in order. So "124" is exactly what I'd expect.

Try rearranging the fans in ports 1-2-3. Here's the thing: The fans work in a series, like Christmas lights. If one goes awry, it'll take out everything else down the chain.

Also ... what other software are you running? Anything else for system monitoring and/or RGB? Your specs mention a GTX 1070 ... which vendor? Have you updated the firmware for the Commander Pro?

I updated the Commander Pro firmware, as it seems there was an update for it I needed. After this the issue was the same and I swapped over fans 3 and 1 on the hub and the result was the image below.

If they work in a chain do the lights work in a clockwise direction before going off to the next one in the chain? If so would this explain why 3/4 of the first fan lights up and then non of the others after this don't? I also experienced this the other day during the hub switching when I swapped 3 and 2 around and the first fan worked, second fan worked but the third in the series did not.

If I do need a replacement fan, they will still be under warranty will they not? As they were bought 1st December 2017 from Amazon. I also don't have any other RGB/system monitoring softwares.

Apologies for the confusion. I'll try and explain it better.

In the above post it shows 3 fans. 2 at the front of the machine and 1 at the rear. The original order of the fans going into the hub is.

Configuration One

1. Rear

2. Front top.

3. Front bottom.

In the above configuration, the following lights happen.

1. All working and responding.

2. All working and responding.

3. Three-quarters of the lights work and respond around the fan, with 3 of the LEDs at the end of the chain not responding.

During the swapping around of the fans on the hub, the second configuration of fans to the hub was.

Configuration Two

1. Front bottom.

2. Front top.

3. Rear

In this configutation, the following lights happened.

1. Three-quarters of the lights work and respond around the fan, with 3 of the LEDs at the end of the chain not responding.

2. No lights working or responding.

3. No lights working or responding.

When I swapped them back to 'Configuration One' the same thing happened with fans 1 and 2 working fine with the 3rd being only three quarters lit up.

I hope this helps clarify.

Would I be able to claim through warranty for a replacement fan do you think?

Just a hunch, because I’ve had something similar to this happen with an LL-series fan... In the Corsair Link configuration software, are you sure the problematic fan is set as the right type of fan? I did this before on the LL-series fans, and one zone of this particular fan just didn’t light up at all, and I went through all the same troubleshooting as you have, only to realize (before I started an RMA) that I just had it set as the wrong type of fan. To the best of my knowledge, it was just some random change too; it worked fine one moment, and then after some time I noticed the dead zone. Lemme know!

  • 3 weeks later...

I've bought the LL 120 fans now thinking it was a fault with the HD120 fan as we discussed. Upon plugging them in everything worked apart from the outer ring on fan 3. This morning only the following is working.

Working:

  • Fan 1 inner ring
  • Part of the outer ring on fan 1
  • LED strip 1

Not working:

  • Fan 2 inner and outer rings
  • Fan 3 inner and outer rings
  • LED strip 2
  • LED strip 3

This must be an issue with the Commander Pro, the Lighting Node or my motherboard USB header now, right?

EDIT: After a few minutes I started to get it responding. All LED strips came on and responded, all Fans came on and responded, apart from Fan 3 outer ring is still off. Also LED strip 3 doesn't seem to like 'Colour Shift' mode and will linger on one colour as if it is lagging behind the LINK program then snap back into sync after a few minutes. LED strip 3 is also brand new as I switched it last night when putting in the LL fans, this was because the other LED strip appeared to be having faults also. Now I'm not sure if there were even faults with the previous fans or strips.

No change after the correct fan type was set. However, I did set all the fans to static yesterday and when I booted the system this morning all fans were the right colour with all parts working. When I went to LINK just now they responded to static changes but the deadzone on fan 3 came back.
