Help upgrading my gaming computer

I want to upgrade my computer to better gaming standards, I just want to buy the parts and used some that i have in my tower but i don't know if it will be compatible with those parts already in the tower. I basically need a better processor, motherboard and memory. Any recommendations on parts.

Hey there! I see you have an Intel Core i7-4790K and a Z97 Motherboard.

If you want to move to a newer platform you'll need a new motherboard/chipset

Chipset: Z170 (6th Gen "Sky lake") Mainstrem: i7-6700 / i7-6700K
Chipset: Z270 (7th Gen "Kaby Lake") Mainstream: i7-7700 / i7-700K
Chipset: Z370 (8th Gen "Coffee Lake") Mainstream: i7-8700 / i7-8700K

All of the Generations I've listed require DDR4 RAM and a new motherboard.

What parts are you wanting to take over to the new build?

Generally when moving parts to a new system the only things that won't be usable if you are moving to a new platform (motherboard/CPU) would be your old Motherboard, CPU and RAM.

I built a new tower in 2016. I had an AMD FX-6300 with a GTX 970. I moved to Intel, I bought new Corsair Vengeance RAM, a new Intel i5-4690K CPU and a MSI Z97S Motherboard. I carried over my Hard drive, SSD, GPU (GTX 970) and my power supply. So I only had to replace/buy new Motherboard, memory and a new CPU.

You could build any i7 system from i7-6700k / i7-7700k or i7-8700k.


Also keep in mind, 9th Gen is about to release and you can use z370 (8th Gen) Motherboards with the new generation, it's still Coffee Lake.

A good OC on your system will keep pace with that GPU. The only way you are going to be pushing your current system is if you go with a 1070 or a 1080. If you don't upgrade your GPU, then just save the money. Another option to consider is to get monitor with gsync with a refresh rate that is ~120hz or higher.

Also depends on what games you play. Some are more CPU intensive than others. Also, what resolution do you play at?

A 4790K is still a really great chip. I see you're running a 4gz, an AIO will easily get you 4.8 and still be fairly quiet. I have found them to be solid overclockers. Would save you some bucks as well. If you're playing 1080p, a 1080 would be a solid upgrade here as well. There are lots of sell offs of 1080s since the next generation of cards came out.
