mr.rei Posted November 5, 2011 Share Posted November 5, 2011 Hey, thanks for looking, tl;dr- Installed win7proX64 12gb xms3 all okay... So, made the switch to SSD but when I download at a 'fast' rate 1+MB/s either by torrent http rtmp/streaming xdcc or any data medium the CPU gets thrashed, 40-60% and the whole OS falls to pieces and lags out, stutters, locks up, resumes, (never BSOD[touch wood]) and becomes generally unusable. untill the data slows or stops. I have tested my old HDD and exact same set up, albeit the SSD, in the rig and on the same data transfer rates the cpu is always -10% use, even on speeds of 4+MB/s, where as the SSD will have problems and high CPU usage. So all process elimination points to the SSD or the OS set up. The SSD is the OS drive WinXP32 and store data on other platter HDD's Any ideas would be great thanks. Whichever application is utilising data trasnport is the resource hog. downloading at 3mb/s on bittorrent, bittorrent is using the cpu. downloading at 3mb/s on firefox, firefox is thrashing cpu. streaming, yeah same you get the idea... this dosent happen on a platter HDD with the same set up and apps, cant understand why it would on a SSD when theay are supposed to be more capable of handling higher bandwidth?? firmware 1.3 sata3.0 When you installed Xp, did you install the Marvel driver found here under the "SATA" section? http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1366/SABERTOOTH_X58/#download Also yes this is what I installed, lis there a different revision I should look for?? In the top left corner there's a part that checks to see if the partition alignment is correct. Windows 7 will do it correctly on install for an SSD whereas XP will not. mr.rei Posted November 6, 2011 Author Share Posted November 6, 2011 Is that application .net framework 3.0 spesific? im on 4.0 and it has a runtime error........ okay edit- got it working but cant run the test... thats a stock 920, so im guessing its hyperthreading confusing it?? Anyway it points out the 31k sector offset allignment I'm assuming it should be 64k ?? (even though, on all my other spinpoint f3's it says - pcide- BAD 31k- BAD wtf? didnt think platter 1tb drives had to be 4k offset?? Anyway to repartition without loosing data? or if I copy the partition back after realingment does that undo my alinment? Is it nessacqarry to format or whats the best way to go about this assuming this is what the test has indicated.... Is the indicated 'slow' write speed what causes the OS to lag when downloading at 'high' rate? There are many guides that give a small tutorial on how to re-align your SSD by resizing the partition by 1-2 mb. But i would secure erase and reinstall Windows. Your data can be placed on the Spinpoint F3 drives. Also, you might want to consider upgrading your OS to Windows 7. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Im going to- 1/ boot from another HDD, my old OS winXP. 2/ Format the SSD + make raw 3/ find and run a copy of DISKPAR.exe 4/ make a new partition with the starting offset at 64 (in sectors) 5/ format to ntfs with an 4096 unit allocation size. 6/ install windows xp again. QUESTIONS I have are- where can I get diskpar.exe ? I have diskparT.exe but seems to be no official downlaod for diskpar, or can you recomend another utility for correctly partitioning? I've looked at GParted but it looks long winded and confusing on how i actually set the offset, or it seems i have to work out what size the whole partition should be to equally divide into 4096 sectors? no idea... what shoud the offset be? is ther an optimal for the 120gb drive? whats min / max?? Diskpar | Size(K) -------------- 64 | 32k 128 | 64k 512 | 256k 1024 | 512k 2048 | 1024k what difference does it make? How can I actually erase or secure format the data on the drive now? from what I have read its hard to truly clean the SSD because of the nature of design.. Can you recomend formatting secure erase tools that will actually 0 the drive, or should I not bother as Iv'e only written to 30% of the drive If i format wont it just fill everything with unneeded 0's?? In diskpart would the syntax- create partition primary [offset=1024] be 1k? would I have to specify the size= in MB? is create partition primary [offset=4096] 4k offset and what I want to acheive? MY SSD IS CORRECTLY ALIGNED?! is 1024k offset enough? BUT... STILL having the lag, stutter when downloading data at speeds of 2mb/s+ via streaming, http or torrent ... cpu usasge hitting 80-90% solid use on all cores. mr.rei Posted November 14, 2011 Author Share Posted November 14, 2011 So... after many failed attempts, I give up on XP as much as I love you, your just not designed for the future. :/ Got a coy of Win7ProX64 and 12gb of 1333 XMS3, RESOLVED all lag stutter so far!! Although read write speeds are a little down?
