It looks like the HD140's have 12 lights in them and they do seem to work off the same HD controller as they are the same ones that come with either kit. EDIT: Yea they do have 12 lights in them according to Corsair's own store page on them http://www.corsair.com/en-us/hd140-rgb-led-high-performance-140mm-pwm-fan

So I am planning on getting 3 HD140's and 3 HD120's. I will have several extra fan/lighting controllers that I won't use. Can I sacrifice one of those to do this? Also I see where you solder the wires onto the Pro Micro, but where do those go to exactly from there? And how is the Pro Micro powered? I have one of the Cablemod RGB lighting kits that has a sata to 5v could I use this somehow for this project.
