This issue has been vexing me (aspiring first time DYO PC builder) while deciding what to buy...

Not a new 1155 sandy bridge motherboard but maybe it is comparable?

According to Intel
documentation (page 52) the PCB footprint of LGA 1366 is 104x104 millimeters. LGA 1155
footprint (page 106), however, is only 95x95mm. So they are only comparable if, say, the 1155 motherboard maker left the DIMM sockets and the center of CPU package where were on 1366.
Which, by the way, seems to be the case with ASUS P67 models (gap of
about 4-5mm between edge of CPU package drawing and DIMM socket), but not with
Gigabyte...

This may cause compatibility issues with some CPU coolers, but with the configuration I used -ASUS Rampage III Formula and Thermalright Venomous X Black I had no problems with using either of the triple channel lanes available.

This newb is mistrustful... The distance from the center of CPU package to its right edge is 52 mm on 1366. The DIMM socket on Rampage III Formula is placed almost right at the edge (on
this pic). The width of Venomous X is 63 mm and it is built symmetrically. Add 1 mm if one puts some kind of rubber between cooler and fan casing. So half of that is 32 mm; add to that 25 mm of fan seen on
his pic - that's 57mm. The fan ought to extend over at least part of first DIMM socket and Vengeance can't fit under it, right? Or am I missing something..?
If one would put one of those Slimline 120x20mm or 140mm fans on it, however... then Venomous X might fit in on ASUS P67, but it would still be very close. Thermalright Archon with the width of 53mm might just fit with 25mm fan, but is both about 10mm taller and much deeper (can cover 1st PCIe slot?). Decisions, decisions... :)
This forum is a tremendous resource - it has saved me money, disappointment and hassle even before I have bought anything Corsair. Thank you very much, and keep up the good work!
