Weird shift-key behaviour

Recommended Posts

I've had my Raptor K30 keyboard since 28 August 2014, and it's behaved strangely since day one. I haven't been able to find the issue in an existing thread on this forum, and would love to know whether anyone else can replicate the problem and/or offer a fix.

The problem is that when I hit certain letter pairs with the shift button down, the second letter comes up as lower case. It's been a particular niggle for me as I do contract work for The Open University, and find myself using the abbreviation "OU" a lot. When I hold down left-shift and hit O then U in quick succession, I get "Ou". (Curiously, though not helpfully, that particular letter-pair works fine when using right-shift.)

I've just spent some time trying every possible combination of letter pairs (see bottom of this post) and identified these pairs as the troublesome ones:

LEFT-shift fails to make second letter uppercase with OU, OI, OP, PO.

RIGHT-shift fails to make second letter uppercase with: QX, XW, XR, XT*, XA, XS, XD, XF.

* Weirdly, the XT pair actually gives Xt half the time, and XX the other half! Freaky.

Software is "Corsair K30 Gaming Keyboard Driver V1.0", which I've today downloaded fresh and reinstalled. I have only one keyboard profile. The problem occurs in in both hardware mode and software mode.

It seems others have experienced this too. ( http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=392478 ) Like them, I find the weirdness doesn't happen if... I... type... really... slowly. I can rule out inconsistent pressing of the shift key, because to save time when typing out the stuff below, I weighted the shift key to free up my hands for doing the letter pairs.

I'm no expert, but this smacks of a software issue rather than physical defect or hardware design flaw. From the link given above, it's obvious the problem isn't unique to me, but it might help me diagnose it if anyone reading this *fails* to replicate it.

All ideas and suggestions (apart from macro workarounds :(: or relearning to type ) very welcome.

Thanks for reading.

Strange. Over a hundred people saw the K30 tag and read this post anyway, but not one person responded. If that's the level of community on this forum, I'm outta here.

There may be over a hundred people that read the thread, but like you had mentioned they may not have the keyboard or it may also be a one off problem that no one has experienced before ( including myself).

Like toasted has mentioned, try the keyboard on another computer to see if it behaves the same. In the meantime, I will try to get my hands on a K30 and see if i can replicate this myself.

I can confirm this bug does happen with a brand new K30.

Besides this problem, which is very annoying, I am very pleased with the K30. It was the keyboard I was looking for a long time. A cheap full sized keyboard with illuminated keys and macro keys. Also, I found it with the US layout where I live, which is rare but a must for me. It has some minor cosmetic issues and I dislike the WASD and ARROW keys having a different color, but I can live with that.

This exact same thing happens to me. Always on combinations of OU and UO, but it only happens if I'm typing that at a certain speed or higher.

I also have noticed that mine (on two keyboards in a row now) will type 'uscs' if I type 'usc' really fast - I get a second 's' on the end.

Again, this has happened to two keyboards now, I just returned the previous one tonight and got this replacement thinking it was just a defect, not a design flaw. I'll be returning this one and not getting another one, as you can imagine.

I have these problems too. the weird Io one is really annoying as I seem to be typing it a lot for work, didn't notice it when I was just casually using the keyboard / using it for gaming, the uscs one does happen but i don't see it being too much of an issue. Wonder if it can be fixed, is it a bug? driver issue? faulty board?....corsair? Or do we need to buy one of the expensive mechanical ones to get a normal working keyboard :P I like the keyboard and will just have to put up with it, can't justify buying another.
