[Questions] - Upgrading soon, should I get GS or GT? RAID 0 or AHCI?
Hello all!
I am currently trying to decide on my next SSD set.
I am trying to figure out if the GS series is better than the GT series and have a couple questions about RAID 0.
As you can see on my profile I have the Force GT 90 (x2) right now and was contemplating going with a single Force GT/S 120 or 240.
My first question: - Which is the better drive of the two, the GT or GS? The GS is newer and cheaper but is spec'ed better on NewEgg. So this may just be planned obsolesence or I am misinterperting the specs?
Second Question (RAID 0 Stuff): - Background: I have 2 Force 90 GT's in RAID 0. I noticed that the boot time is longer in RAID 0. Overall the ATTO is hitting peak throughput of about 1 Gig per sec and I verified this with SiSoft Sandra. Both report stupid fast throughput, very happy with that. Now here is the question...
- Why would my boot time be longer with RAID 0 than AHCI? Granted, I am talking about the difference between 8 seconds and 6.5 seconds
But I figured with RAID 0 it would decrease and not increase. All my prior mechanical drives have decreased boot time in RAID 0.
- Is it bad to run this specific model in RAID instead of AHCI? I heard that the trim wont work and that the drives will not be used optimally. I am not on the source of this assertion but if anyone can confirm either way that would be great! Too much confusing info on the internetz by people that have no clue.
Thanks for your time!
-Scott

This thread may help with the GS vs GT.
http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=108594
The boot time shouldn't be slower than a single drive, Try a clean boot.
Start Menu> Msconfig> Services> Tick "Hide all Microsoft Services" and press Disable All. Same with that "Startup" tab.
If you want to revert back to start everything, Click "Enable All"
TRIM as of now does not work with RAID Arrays.

Yeah, I have tweaked my boot settings and shut down services, etc. Thats why I am perplexed that it boots a second or so slower. Both set ups were on a fresh install, extra services and start up apps shut off, all drivers and firmware for all devices are the latest. Granted we are talking about the difference of 2 seconds or so but still... Doesnt make sense.
Im now debating whether the RAID will be worth it or not if it doesnt have TRIM. Is TRIM that big of a deal in your opinion?
Thanks for the reply

Well, I did some digging and an upcoming release of IRST 11.5 will support TRIM on RAID 0 so that will be nice!

Well! I decided to wipe drives, re-raid and try the 11.5 drivers and sure enough it reports that TRIM is now active in RAID 0!
As well, my boot time decreased about 1 second. This new driver certainly made the difference!
Thanks!

EDIT: Here are the drivers I am using: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...?DwnldID=21592

Yeah, these drivers mad a huge difference. I think I will forgo the new drives until the next major build. Two GT 90's in RAID 0 are pretty damn fast
