Asus P9X79 Pro Memory Question

Howdy!

I'm building a new rig using a Asus P9X79 Pro motherboard. I'm pretty out of practice with alot of the newer system timing and terminology.

Recently at a big box store I asked for RAM that would be compatible with this (aware that doing so is risky). They gave me CMZ16GXM4A1600C9 which is, according to ASUS's QVL memory list compatible with this motherboard. Below is a list from the motherboards instructions showing the QVL compatible RAM.

According to the memory finder, a similar Vengeance RAM module CMZ16GX3M4X1600C9 is what you guys suggest. I just wanted clarification on which modules are actually supported/recommended.

haha. Alright RamGuy. I was hoping for a little more clarification as to if the modules would work or not since ASUS suggests 1 SKU, and Corsair suggests another. I'll take your advice though and order up the suggested quad channel modules since I know you guys have tested them.

Any chance these are available with blue heat in the near future? ;):

Yes I am sure we will offer them in different colors but I don't know when they will be available. The link I gave you was a list of modules made for and tested on the chipset that this MB uses so any modules listed on that link will work.

So all you have to decide is how much memory do you want in your system and will you be over clocking or not then of course how much budget do you have.

As far as what is on ASUS's or any MB makers QVL list that is of little consequence as they will normally modules they have on hand even parts that may no longer be available. So while I would agree it is a good reference that is all it is.

Thanks for replying back on this RamGuy. That's more or less what I figured was going on in terms of testing for the QVL. Figured it was better to go with your guys recommendation in the long run.

ATM I have 32GB (16x2) CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9B. Ramtest86 fails on test 8 every time, and at 1333 it passes the first time, but generally not the 2nd. I've already ordered up 2 16GB CMZ16GX3M4X1600C9. I'm guessing these will pass Memtest w/o any issues.

Thanks again for the explanation.

If you want 32 Gig you need to be purchasing the 32 Gig set mixing two sets is a crap shoot sometimes.

Well unfortunately I had already ordered the two sets since I was on a time crunch in returning the old sets.

After reading your reply I was a little nervous about my luck using two sets in sync. I must've won the crap shoot though. I'm happy to report I've had zero issues with this RAM. After testing each set individually for several passes of Memtest86, I tested them together for a day with their XMP profile enabled with no errors.

After doing quite a bit of reading it's pretty apparent that I am more lucky than wise. Still I'm stoked with my current setup and have had no issues thus far. I will keep your advice about mixing/matching sets for future builds though RamGuy. Thanks again for the help.

GJ Corsair. :D:
