Mnpctech.com
This scratch build project is for FrozenCPU and sponsored by Corsair! http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/picture_library/planetside2_corsair_c70_case_mod_gaming_pc_higby_fan_grill_mnpctech_corsair_banner.jpg "FrozenCPU" theme PC to commemorate their new building expansion. http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/picture_library/frozencpu_ultimate_tech_bench_station_aqua_computer_mnpctech_concept.jpg http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/picture_library/frozencpu_ultimate_tech_bench_station_aqua_computer_mnpctech_banner.jpg FrozenCPU wanted their PC to be jaw dropping, unique and utilitarian. Cheapskate and I have been brainstorming ideas of a sexy billet Tech Station for a long time. Mark & Bucky were intrigued with the idea. After conference a few calls, I learned they share our love for Sci-Fi, custom cars, and bikes. I made notes before initiating brainstorm session with Cheaps. I purge elements of what I'm envisioning into a funnel, inserted into his mad munky brain. After the Concept is born, the next stage is altering the Concept to host their tasty menu for the best hardware. We suggested the buildf utilize two loops with 480 radiators. Mark loved idea of automating the PC in some manner. I suggested the cover open automatically. We're tentatively titling their build "FrozenCPU Tech Station" but "Billet Pron Bench" may be more appropriate. This build log will share highlights from the build videos that will be produced for Mnpctech's YouTube Channel Another wicked custom PC build by Mnpctech.com! http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/picture_library/2010.mnpctech.banner.jpg Cheapskate and I have been brainstorming ideas of a sexy billet Tech Station for a long time. Mnpctech.com
We have 3 more parts to make, actuator extension arm and two cover ribs for the ends. So while I wait for those, I worked on the boring, but necessary stage of the build, cleaning up all of the milled pieces. I dismantled the chassis so I could clean and remove minor scratches or the manufacturer ink stamp on the surface of the aluminum. http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/picture_library/frozencpu_com_tech_test_bench_station_mnpctech_billet_computer_parts1.jpg http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/picture_library/frozencpu_com_tech_test_bench_station_mnpctech_billet_computer_parts2.jpg http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/picture_library/frozencpu_com_tech_test_bench_station_f_red_scotchbrite1.jpg http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/picture_library/frozencpu_com_tech_test_bench_station_f_red_scotchbrite2.jpg I'm using 3M red Scotchbrite pads to remove any small scratches or marring to the surface of the aluminum. This is "very Fine" version and it's also a great alternative to sandpaper for prepping PC cases for painting. You can also use these 3M Scotchbrite pads for deburring Steel, Acrylic or Plastic. http://www.mnpctech.com/3m_red_scotchbrite_pad_37447_07447_mnpctech.jpg http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/picture_library/frozencpu_com_tech_test_bench_station_f_red_scotchbrite3.jpg http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/picture_library/frozencpu_com_tech_test_bench_station_f_red_scotchbrite4.jpg http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/picture_library/frozencpu_com_tech_test_bench_station_f_red_scotchbrite5.jpg Got the final two pieces finished last night, so today I'm going in early to start assembly of the cover, Yay! Yesterday I took these photos of the motherboard tray. rdeyoung
Very nice indeed!!! When you fixed the scratches, how did you make it blend so well with the "brushed" aluminum? You cant even tell there were any blemishes!:headbang:
Mnpctech.com
Thank you rdeyoung! You can use Red Scotchbrite pad, and rub all of the surface in the same direction. If you have deep scratches, use Medium grit sandpaper first, then Scotchbrite over that
FlawlessSoul
That is one hell of a PSU - custom made socket to force use of the beefy cable, EIGHT 8-pin GPU connectors! That's insane! Best have something worth using it on!
Mnpctech.com
no doubt Flawless, it's Uber Power. We're looking into adding a gas charged spring to the other side of the Tech Station, just as added precautionary measure, in case the actuator ever failed. Several people expressed interest in making ATX version of the CNC Machined Aluminum Motherboard Tray. I'm looking into contracting another shop to make these, so I don't have a cost confirmed yet, but here is what the proposed kit would look like and include, One Mainboard Tray with four large opening for PSU cables and connections. One Rear I/O Shield Plate with & PCI slots. Two triangular Motherboard brackets that connect Mainboard Tray to I/O Shield. Two reinforcement brackest for triangular motherboard brackets. Nine Motherboard Stand-off risers. Finish is brushed bare Aluminum. Includes 6/32 tapered flat head stainless machine screws. http://www.mnpctech.com/atx_motherboard_tray_diy_removable_scratch_build_mnpctech_frozencpu_aluminum_billet3.jpg http://www.mnpctech.com/atx_motherboard_tray_diy_removable_scratch_build_mnpctech_frozencpu_aluminum_billet2.jpg http://www.mnpctech.com/atx_motherboard_tray_diy_removable_scratch_build_mnpctech_frozencpu_aluminum_billet1.jpg http://www.mnpctech.com/atx_motherboard_tray_diy_removable_scratch_build_mnpctech_frozencpu_aluminum_billet4.jpg http://www.mnpctech.com/atx_motherboard_tray_diy_removable_scratch_build_mnpctech_frozencpu_aluminum_billet5.jpg
Mnpctech.com
We're adding Ameritool's Gas Spring gas charged lift spring to the other side of the Tech Station. This is just added measure to help carry weight of the cover and extend lifespan of actuator and prevent cover from slamming shut, in case the actuator ever broke or failed for some reason. I've chosen the 10 pound lift rating for their 750-4 Stainless Gas Spring End Fitting: EFC-10M included 10mm Ball Studs Sold Separately MATERIALS & FINISHES EXTERNAL SURFACES: SHAFT: Chrome Plated 316 Stainless Steel CYLINDER: 316/316L Stainless Steel Sold in Pairs Only, $108.86, so we'll have spare for future project. http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/picture_library/ameritool_gas_assist_spring_shock_gamign_pc_case1.jpg http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/picture_library/ameritool_gas_assist_spring_shock_gamign_pc_case2.jpg

Mnpctech.com
Thank you guys for the comments and staying tuned! The Ameritool gas charged lift spring is installed, and WORKS PERFECT. Thanks to Cheapskate and all of his help in revising everything. I made the decision to add assist spring as SAFETY measure and as secondary assist in supporting weight of the 8.5 pound cover. It will also help extend lifespan of electric firgelli actuator and prevent cover from slamming shut, in case the actuator ever needed to be removed for replacement, or failed for some reason. Mnpctech.com
Hey everyone, just a small update. I'm waiting for hardware and custom sleeved PSU cables to arrive from frozencpu. Evga has informed us the X79 Dark should be ready sometime this month. I realized something disappointing this week with the Firgelli actuator. It's Black threaded fastener connector / cap was casted in hollow plastic, not solid. I was closing the cover and the cap snapped. We're now making a replacement from solid aluminum. I'm glad I made this discovery before the Tech Station was shipped to FrozenCPU. http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/picture_library/firgelli_actuator_arm_threaded_cap_hollow_broke_snap_failed2.jpg broken cap pictured in two pieces, alongside another actuator arm with cap inserted http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/picture_library/firgelli_actuator_arm_threaded_cap_hollow_broke_snap_failed1.jpg Black threaded fastener connector / cap was casted in hollow plastic, not solid. http://www.mnpctech.3dpixelnet.com/picture_library/firgelli_actuator_arm_threaded_cap_hollow_broke_snap_failed3.jpg
Mnpctech.com
Vern Gibson aka "Twizted" posted video of the custom PCB control board he created for Firgelli's PCB board, so we can power the actuator without power to the PC.
