Default Is my TX650W fried?

I was re-wiring some case fans and had two of the fan power wires exposed whilst the other end was connected to a molex connection on the psu. My pc was turned off, but unfortunately my 5 year old snuck up behind me and turned the pc on and the 12v and 5v wires touched and shorted the pc.

I just did the paper clip test, and the fan on the psu span up fine. I re-connected my video card and my sata hdd, and it booted just fine.

However, as soon as I try to use a molex connection (either for my ide hdd, or even a 120mm fan), the pc stays completely dead. My multimeter reads 12v from the molex connectors. Is there anything I can do, or do I have to buy a new psu?

Update:

120mm fans now seem to run ok from molex connections, but I think my slave drive (160Gb ide) is junked. If I have a molex conection hooked up, the pc will do nothing (no small fan movement, beep or anything), but if I remove the molex connection from the ide drive, the pc boots up and runs just fine.

Can a broken hard drive affect the whole system that way? I removed the ide cable and just tried to power it up, but there was nothing.

The psu is now also chirping every 5 secs, which I am a bit worried about, but I need to test my ide drive in someone elses system to see if it's really gone for good....

If your computer start with an minimal component is ok. The big problem, one of other component probably is on short circuit, psu detect short circuit and enter in protection mode. Try to test other component on other computer

Let's get it replaced, please use the On Line RMA Request Form and we will be happy to replace it. Be sure to check the box that says “I've already spoken to Technical Support and/or RAM Guy.”

I have a follow up question. I have installed my VX450 whilst the TX650 is being rma'd. I have also had to install my old 9600GT in place of my GTX 260. I used this psu for the last 2 years with my Q9550 and 9600GTwithout any issues. The strange thing is that now this psu is also softly chirping every 2 seconds, but only under Windows 7 64 bit. I have a dual boot with XP Pro (x86), and it does not make any noise at all. The VX450 has been back in it's original packaging since I took it out of the pc, so it's not gotten dusty or anything.

Does this mean that maybe some other component is also faulty, but is only stressed by Windows 7, or should this not make any difference at all?

The funny thing is that when I upgraded to the TX650 and GTX 260, I also upgraded my case, and it is much quieter now. This means that I don't know if the VX450 would have been chirping previously, since I would not have heard it over the noise of my old case!

I have just installed Win 7 Home Premium over the weekend, and now the noise from my VX450 is completely gone - weird! Anyway, no issues now, just have to wait for my TX650 to show up so that I can re-install my GTX 260 and get down to some Modern Warfare 2!!

It sounds like there could have been a driver issue previously which could have been causing the chirping, we have seen that happen with certain video driver/OS combinations.

Just wanted to give big props to Corsair - I sent my TX650 last Thursday lunch time, and I received the replacement today, only the 4th working day - awesome stuff! Thanks again, Ram Guy!
