Corsair Link 4 Malfunction

When software is installed initially then one can control the speed and it detects when system is under load. Fans then automatically speed up. But they do not remain constant like with the H80. With the H115i the fans are running and varying speed constantly. With the H80 fans would slowly speed up but the audible revs remained very consistent.

When one logs off or reboots the system then the software does not work and the fans do not speed up they spin at a low speed. There is a noticeable heat build up around the Sata, GPU, NIC adaptors and the Cooling Pump Block.

Attempted uninstalling software but CorsairLink 4 will not uninstall. Have to boot up in Safe Mode, perform an system restore and then boot back into Safe mode for the process to complete successfully.

Tried out the following versions of CorsairLink:

4.8.2.1 then 4.8.0.82 and 4.7.0.77 and the end result remains the same.

The CorsairLink 4 software when it detects the heat sensors, fans and other system information incorrectly reports up to 8 fans, some running as fast as 30,000 revs while the system only has the following fans: Front 200mm inlet fan, Side 220mm inlet fan, Rear 140mm extraction fan, AMD Sapphire GPU single fan, Cooler Master PSU fan and the two inlet fans on the H115i Radiator. This is a total of 7 fans. I do not think the PSU fan is detected.

The CPU cores are also incorrectly detected as Core #2, #3, #4 and #5, while the Intel Extreme Tuning utility correctly detects the cores as core #1, #2, #3, and #4.

Tested this on windows 8.1 with the same end result.

Also need to know if H115i will work on my system similar to the H80 I had previously without using the USB header for the Corsair link.

Also Tried HX860i power supply but mobo post and diagnostic lights not coming on so mobo not starting. All other devices start up.

I would like to acquire the corsair commander pro to control multiple fan speeds. It is indicated as windows 7 compatible (CorsairLink 4) but with the above issues I will have to wait until we can pinpoint the root cause and once resolved I will get buy it and install.

You have a lot going on here; let me try to parse it.

When software is installed initially then one can control the speed and it detects when system is under load. Fans then automatically speed up. But they do not remain constant like with the H80. With the H115i the fans are running and varying speed constantly. With the H80 fans would slowly speed up but the audible revs remained very consistent.

This sounds like an issue with how the H80 handled its fan curves vs. how the H115i handles its fan curves. What temperature source are you using for the H115i?

When one logs off or reboots the system then the software does not work and the fans do not speed up they spin at a low speed. There is a noticeable heat build up around the Sata, GPU, NIC adaptors and the Cooling Pump Block.

How are you measuring the heat build up?

Attempted uninstalling software but CorsairLink 4 will not uninstall. Have to boot up in Safe Mode, perform an system restore and then boot back into Safe mode for the process to complete successfully.

Tried out the following versions of CorsairLink:

4.8.2.1 then 4.8.0.82 and 4.7.0.77 and the end result remains the same.

This is extremely unusual. Can you describe "will not uninstall"? What specifically happens when you try to uninstall Corsair Link?

The CorsairLink 4 software when it detects the heat sensors, fans and other system information incorrectly reports up to 8 fans, some running as fast as 30,000 revs while the system only has the following fans: Front 200mm inlet fan, Side 220mm inlet fan, Rear 140mm extraction fan, AMD Sapphire GPU single fan, Cooler Master PSU fan and the two inlet fans on the H115i Radiator. This is a total of 7 fans. I do not think the PSU fan is detected.

This is a known issue that has been logged and will be fixed.

The CPU cores are also incorrectly detected as Core #2, #3, #4 and #5, while the Intel Extreme Tuning utility correctly detects the cores as core #1, #2, #3, and #4.

This is also a known issue that has been logged and will be fixed.

Tested this on windows 8.1 with the same end result.

Also need to know if H115i will work on my system similar to the H80 I had previously without using the USB header for the Corsair link.

You can absolutely use the H115i without the Corsair Link software. It will run at its default fan curve based on its internal coolant temperature.

Also Tried HX860i power supply but mobo post and diagnostic lights not coming on so mobo not starting. All other devices start up.

I'm confused. Is your system not POSTing with the HX850i?

I would like to acquire the corsair commander pro to control multiple fan speeds. It is indicated as windows 7 compatible (CorsairLink 4) but with the above issues I will have to wait until we can pinpoint the root cause and once resolved I will get buy it and install.

Totally understandable.

Regarding the H80 fan sound, I was trying to convey that the push/pull fans did not pulsate constantly, whereas on the H115i the fans seem to speed up slightly then slow down and this happens consistently. A bit of an irritation. On the H80 the fans progressively sped up as the heat buildup was detected no speed up then down then up again.

The heat build up at the components specified was with a thermal detection device I loaned from an Electrical Engineer and with touch. This point is maybe subjective and can be ignored.

I will redo the test of installing the software, uninstalling using the normal method and then take a look to see what remains on the Control Panel, on disk etc and revert back with more details on this point.

Regarding the Corsair Link software and the number of fans detected, is this in any way dependent on the Case selection. If so, how do I specify a custom case if the case is not a Corsair case (HAFX 942) and the number of fans.

Does the software allow for the configuration and uploading of a photo for non-corsair cases?

In the distributor's test centre for RMA items we conducted tests on the AX860i, HX850i and neither would result in POST.

What I found interesting is that the HX1200i did POST on the MOBO. The technician did point out that Haswell chipsets did have a compatibility issue with some Corsair PSU's and did not start a POST. I eventually had to settle for the HX850 psu.

You may want to configure your own fan curve to see if you can't find something more pleasing.

Thank you for the update regarding the known issues regarding the CPU core and number of fans detected.

The number of fans detected is not dependent on the case selection at all; the case selection is solely the image you see in the Configuration page. You can absolutely upload a photo of your non-Corsair case.

When I mentioned that there are 7 fans in the case only 4 are connected to MOBO fan headers. I accept that they will be detected and the GPU fan. Is the PSU fan also detected automatically. This would account for 6 fans in total.

If the HX850i is connected via Corsair Link, its fan will be detected automatically and appear in the HX850i's tile in the Link dashboard.

The only compatibility issue I've ever heard of relates to the old CX and VS power supplies and Haswell's low power sleep states.

As for the issue you were seeing, it sounds like the board itself was bad. If only one in three power supplies posted on the board, either you had a major run of bad luck with power supplies (unlikely) or the board itself is extremely finicky (more likely).

Correct me if I am wrong but the HXnnn(n)i range of PSU's should roughly be the same in technical design with the exception that it will have more transformer tapping's or power rails for more attached devices, additional cap's or larger caps.

Roughly the same compared to what?

Received my new H115i cooler and will try adjust the fan curve. Not sure what the effect will be when the CorsairLink 4 software fails. Where is the fan curve selection saved in CorsairLink or on the Cooler CPU Header block (is there some controller).

This board is old admittedly but very robust. I sometime run up to 6 virtual machines simultaneously running Linux etc. The machine used to reboot without notice randomly and then after a few months the problem became severe and the reboot was every few seconds. No Blue screen errors. Performed a PSU check and found that the PSU had 12.5v rail to the MOBO 24 pin plug that had a low or no voltage. This is what led to replacing the PSU. Now the machine is stable again, but like you say finicky.

Roughly the same compared to what?

What I was trying to say is that the main PSU circuiboard should be the same just that the transformer and some other components may differ to allow for the higher work load rating for example the HX850i will not be capable of powering as many devices as the HX1200i. These differences could be on the transformer secondary coil windings and tappings for the different voltages etc. What component would cause incompatibility with C7/C6 sleep states?

Advice required: When locating the H115i cooler in the upper reaches of the case some advise that one should pull the air into the case. Would this matter and by how many degrees? That is if extracting the warm air from inside the case through the radiator in the normal flow path to the exterior.

Or would it make a bigger difference in cooling to pull in the cooler air through the top vents, the radiator into the case and use ML140 PWN fans fron and back to move marmer air out faster..

We typically recommend using your H115i as an exhaust - having the cooler pull in air from the inside of the chassis and exhaust it out of the top of the case.

  • 5 weeks later...

I read on another thread that one should install 4.7.0.77. I had already tried it but decided to give it another try. The initial install detects 4 fans. One of the 4 fans is in fact connected to the H115i. But it also displays the cooler fan and pump speeds separately. The fan I would think is fan #2 is the Liquid cooler fan and there is a difference in speeds between the two.

Another interesting observation is that the software installed 100%, no errors until you reboot the machine then the errors crop up again. I uninstalled the main application and left the drivers and usb dongle in place, then reinstalled the corsair link software again. This time it detect 8 fans and now we find the high speeds of 45000rpm etc.

I also noticed the unsigned driver issue when installing 4.9.0.57 and have included information as uploads. Please check them as I am not sure what is already known, but from what I read there are definitely a lot of unhappy customers.

Surely one could get the driver software suppliers to create a certificate that can be bundled with the msi installer and then all should hopefully be OK.

Dustin mentions that there is an intermittent problem with installing unsigned s/w on the test bed at corsair. My system is securely setup and I consistently get the same errors.

I also read that there is a new version that is supposed to fix unsigned issues 4.9.1.23 but there is no mention of it in the download area.

I installed 4.9.1.23 and it installs OK. The drivers are detected as being signed. It worked for a while and then stopped working. Now it is back to rolling back the machine to prior to installing the software.

The error I used to get regarding System.unauthorised.access has been resolved. All software houses seem to presume that all PC users logon as the administrator. This is where some of us are a bit different. My setup has a super user account which is not used and then I logon as a normal user. What I did is in the application properties check allow all users to execute program in the compatibility section.

Here are some more info and screen shots. I hope they are useful for getting to the bottom of this elusive issue.

Remainder of files.

I have included a screenshot of an observation regarding the fans and temperature sensors. It would seem that the fans are being doubled up and the factor of the speed differential between the actual fan and the ghost is roughly 31 to 32 times. I also noticed that for the main board the temperature sensors are also doubled up. On the screenshot I have grouped the duplicates together.

Now I am getting a strange error not related to the signed drivers or unauthorised access but the following:

The issue where Corsair Link has trouble with users who aren't administrators is a known bug and I believe that's getting fixed in our next drop.

The erroneous fan readings you're getting are going to be the result of how your motherboard reports fan speeds to the CPUID SDK we use. It's impossible to have readings work 100% correctly on 100% of systems, especially if a motherboard vendor uses slightly flaky sensors.

The motherboard is manufactured by Intel. Don't think they will produce anything that would damage their reputation and effect share.

During my fiddling I did install, 4.7.0.77 and it did report the correct number of fans. The only issue was the CPU core detection and numbering. It started from 2 to 5. Unfortunately, I did not document what I did and cannot reproduce it again.

This will have to wait till I am finished with an Oracle project, then I can build the entire desktop from scratch and take snapshots as I progress.

Also notice that the fans do not spin up beyond the normal quiet mode as the machine warms up until the software is started. The software does not startup automatically.

You may not have read my 1st posting for the day. I had to make two postings as I exceeded the 10 uploads. Read it there is mention of how I resolved the non-administrator user for the time being.

Yes it would be helpful if Corsair could develop the system to prompt at install time whether a single user or all users will be able to alter the settings and then have the code to support this.

CPU core numbering weirdness has been observed in earlier versions of Link. Also, phantom fans, fans reported twice, pump speeds reported at 1/2 speed. Some of these issues have been around for a long time. I don't know if the latest release has finally dealt with them. It seems like new Link releases focus on fixes for new, more serious bugs and some of the older bugs never seem to get dealt with. Link doing strange things when you try to move it to secondary or tertiary monitors is another one...
